Real-Time Telemetry Is About Trust
CanSat and TEKNOFEST ground stations taught me that real-time pipelines are not only about speed. They are about readable state, clean boundaries, useful logs, and replayable evidence.
I did not learn data pipelines from batch jobs first.
I learned them from a satellite falling from roughly 1 km, a serial port streaming telemetry, and a PyQt5 interface that had to stay readable while everyone watched.
That changed the definition of a pipeline for me. The hard part was not only moving data quickly. The hard part was making the data trustworthy while the system was under pressure.
Fast Is Not Enough
My first model of real-time software was simple: make the data arrive quickly and the rest will follow.
That model broke during testing. The stream kept arriving, but a chart update made the UI stutter for a moment. In that pause, nobody could tell whether the satellite was still transmitting or the software was catching up.
Fast and unreadable is still bad software.
The operator does not care that packets are technically flowing if the screen makes them doubt what is happening.
Keep Boundaries Clear
The most important decision in the CanSat ground station was separating ingestion from presentation.
A dedicated serial handler consumed telemetry. The PyQt5 interface rendered updates through signals. The read loop did not wait for charts. The charts did not own the data path.
That boundary made the system faster, but more importantly, it made failures easier to understand. If something went wrong, I could ask a sharper question: did data stop arriving, or did the UI stop rendering it?
The same shape carried into TEKNOFEST: payload acquisition, WebSocket transport, parsing, logging, and visualization stayed as separate responsibilities. The system became easier to test because each part had a job.
Logs Are A Second Interface
In telemetry work, logging is not extra.
Once the live session ends, the log becomes the only way to reconstruct the mission. It has to be complete enough to explain what happened, structured enough to parse, and simple enough to inspect without a special tool.
For CanSat India and TEKNOFEST, CSV logging became part of the product. It let us compare readings, replay behavior, and debug strange moments after the pressure was gone.
A pipeline that cannot explain itself afterward is incomplete.
Humans Are Downstream Too
The pipeline does not end when data reaches the UI. It ends when a human understands it.
Raw altitude, GPS, pressure, and orientation values are data. A live chart, a trajectory map, and a 3D orientation view are interpretation. That final transformation matters as much as the ingestion path.
I stopped thinking of dashboards as polish after this work. In live systems, the dashboard is an output format. If it is hard to read under pressure, the pipeline is still weak.
Replay Changes Everything
The TEKNOFEST CSV simulator was one of the highest-leverage pieces of the system.
It let the ground station ingest recorded telemetry as if a flight were happening live. I could test chart behavior, map updates, timing assumptions, and longer sessions without needing the payload every time.
That made debugging calmer. It also made design feedback more honest, because the interface was judged against realistic data instead of a clean demo.
Replay turns a one-time event into an input you can study.
The Rule I Kept
Real-time systems force you to care about boundaries.
Acquisition should be boring. Parsing should be explicit. Transport should be measurable. Storage should support replay. Presentation should optimize for clarity over completeness.
That is the useful lesson I kept from telemetry work: the best real-time pipelines are not the ones that feel fastest in a demo. They are the ones that stay understandable when something is noisy, slow, or slightly wrong.
